Extra-Curricular Opportunities at MHS

Explore the many extracurricular activities that MHS has to offer!

Auditorium Tech:

Band: In the fall the band starts their season late July/Early August  with band camp, to prepare for their marching season.   In the Fall the band performs at all of the home football games,  competes in the Scholastic Marching Band Circuit and participates in the MSBOA marching band festival.  While the marching band isn't extremely competitive, it does strive for excellence and it takes up a significant amount of time in the fall.   Students are able to play a fall sport and do marching band throughout the fall season.   After marching band, they transition to concert band where they have concerts at Christmas, MSBOA Festival Season and in the Spring.   The band also participates in Solo/Ensemble festival and plays at 8 sporting events in the winter.    Our band strives for excellence in performance, along with a strong community feel of support and inclusiveness.

Choir: Here at MHS we offer two choral music options for students. First is the MHS Concert Choir where any student 9th-12th grade is welcome. This group is open to anyone no matter the students abilities or previous singing experience. Concert Choir performs several times per year for our community and participates in Michigan School Vocal Music Association events each spring. If interested in joining the Concert Choir, please talk with Mr. Patton.
Our second choral option for students is the Stanton Street Singers. This group is auditioned and is focused primarily on community outreach, singing for events outside of the school such as Christmas Tree lightings and singing at retirement communities, etc. This group is student driven, meaning students make the decisions of repertoire choices, performances, etc. If interested in joining this group, please talk with Mr. Emelander.

Color Guard: The Color Guard is a vital part of our marching band, bringing energy and artistry to every performance! Color guard members join the band for all summer rehearsals and band camp, where they’ll spin flags, twirl rifles, and learn the marching routine alongside the musicians. If a member doesn’t play an instrument, they’ll transition out of the class after the first marking period, but they’ll still perform at every event and competition, adding a powerful visual element to the show. The color guard is essential to bringing the band’s performance to life!

Creative Writing Club: The Creative Writing Club meets every Tuesday after school during the fall. Anyone in grades 9-12 can attend. During the meetings, students write about and discuss many topics. The advisor may assign a prompt, or students may play a game that helps them to create and share ideas. It is a judgment free zone in which writers are encouraged to write freely and offer feedback to other writers. There are also three competitions against other schools in the West Michigan Conference. These are held in the fall and winning writers and schools are able to receive recognition and honors for their writing.

DECA: All students enrolled in a marketing course at MHS have the opportunity to participate in DECA. DECA is an association of marketing students that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. Students in Montague DECA have various leadership field trips as well as the opportunity to compete with students from around the state and world at DECA competitions. You can learn more about DECA at mideca.org and deca.org.

Hope Squad: Hope Squad is a peer-to-peer mental health awareness and suicide prevention group. By partnering with local mental health agencies and training student members to recognize warning signs and connect those struggling to help, Hope Squad builds positive relationships and changes the culture surrounding mental health within the high school and local community. Hope Squad's content aligns closely with social-emotional learning standards, creating a foundation for students to develop social awareness, relationship skills, self-management, self-awareness, and responsible decision-making. Members are not asked to be counselors but rather are taught to recognize the signs that a peer is struggling and refer them to a trusted adult.

As a member of the prom committee, you will be able to help plan the party of the school year and send the seniors off in a way they will never forget! Prom Committee looks for students who have an eye for details, have creative ideas, are organized, can respond to tasks in a timely manner, and are good at budgeting funds. Students in this club get to help plan the theme of prom, find the venue, sell tickets, and decorate the venue. If you are a junior and are interested in planning the best party of the year, email labeana@mapsk12.org for more information.

Quiz Bowl: Quiz bowl is a game in which two teams compete head-to-head to answer questions covering many areas of knowledge, including history, literature, mathematics, science, fine arts, current events, popular culture, sports, and more. The Montague Quiz Bowl team is open to all high school grade levels. Those who love game shows like "Jeopardy" and "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" are encouraged to join. Competitions are weekly during the Quiz Bowl season (December through March).  At each event, our quizzers will compete in five matches against nearby schools. Quiz Bowl is a great way to showcase trivia knowledge, make connections with others, and a great opportunity to make friends.

Renaissance Leadership Class: Renaissance Leadership Class is a curriculum created by Jostens Renaissance that is designed to build school culture among students and staffulty (bus drivers, cafeteria staff, custodians, administrator assistants, administrators, and teachers).  The school culture is designed by the students in class to create an environment where everyone is excited to come to school.  In this class, we RESPECT what the stakeholders of our school find most important and valuable.  Our C.O.R.E. expectations are what this class is based upon; Community, Ownership, Respect, and Excellence.  This class makes a conscious effort to RECOGNIZE the awesome things students and staffulty do to make our school a better place.  We REWARD their achievements and behaviors that are respected at MHS.  We continually REINFORCE our positive behaviors throughout the year by the appearance of our school and the importance of graduating and continuing school or joining the military or workforce after high school.  We also reinforce the everyday culture of respect and recognition by working together to reinforce our C.O.R.E. values at MHS. This creates strong RELATIONSHIPS with one another that are strengthened in small ways through notes to staff and students and, shoutouts or big ways like community days, pep rallies, and student and teacher appreciation. When we respect, recognize, reward, reinforce, and build relationships with one another we see great results and a morale that goes through the roof creating a culture where everyone feels and knows they matter.

Robotics:

Student Senate: Student Senate coordinates activities including Homecoming each year where they have to plan the “Theme”, spirit days, the dance and the all school assembly. It’s a lot of work, but very rewarding. They also put on a blood drive in the fall to help local blood banks. We support local churches by helping with a Christmas gift donation for financially struggling families. Student Senate members like to welcome students with High Five Fridays once in a while also.  Making students feel welcome when they enter the building is important. They also collaborate ways to coordinate activities to include the student body. An expectation of a student Senate member is to be a positive influence and role model while upholding the school rules. Student Senate members represent the student body in decision making, collaboration and activities. Members can develop leadership skills, and be a voice for their student body.

Yearbook: The Yearbook Committee is a group of students who work together to capture and celebrate the special moments of each school year. From taking photos and designing pages to writing captions and gathering student submissions, this team creates a yearbook that reflects the spirit of our school. Whether you’re interested in photography, graphic design, writing, or just want to help preserve memories, the Yearbook Committee is a fun way to get involved and be a part of something special! Email deanl@mapsk12.org for more information or if interested.
